A Day in the PEERS® Program: Sarah's Story
It's 4:00 PM on a Tuesday when Sarah logs into her Google Meet session with Julie from Strivesocial. Like many 16-year-olds, Sarah sometimes finds it challenging to navigate social situations, but today she's feeling excited about her PEERS® session.
Julie's friendly face appears on screen, and she starts with a warm check-in about Sarah's week. They discuss how Sarah used her conversation skills at school last week - she successfully joined a lunch table discussion using the PEERS® strategies she learned.
During today's hour-long session, Julie introduces a new topic: handling disagreements with friends. Using real-life examples that feel familiar to Sarah, they role-play different scenarios. Julie demonstrates helpful phrases and body language, making complex social rules manageable and practical.
The session includes interactive elements - watching short video examples, practicing responses, and even some light-hearted moments as they discuss what works and what doesn't. Sarah particularly enjoys the straightforward, step-by-step approach that makes social interactions feel less overwhelming.
Before wrapping up, Julie and Sarah plan some homework practice for the week ahead. Sarah feels confident about trying these new skills with her classmates, knowing she has specific strategies to use and that she'll get to discuss how it went in next week's session.
As the Google Meet call ends, Sarah realises that what once seemed like mysterious social 'rules' are becoming clearer each week. She's looking forward to her next session, where she'll continue building her social confidence in this supportive, understanding environment.
